The Spirit Lives On

by Lord Yoakum

I was born the moment Anakin Skywalker arose from the molten lava, left to die. His former friend Obi Wan had defeated him in battle. The weak man that was Anakin was then wiped clean, and in his place was I, Vader. I am the darker aspect of him, and every living being has something similar within their soul. In his case, I was now free to take over our body and be dominate, ruled by the hatred that led him along the Dark Path. The Jedi that trained him had darkness in them also, but they were strong enough to put it down long ago. They were strong, but I was stronger.

I helped my master, Darth Sidious, who was Palpatine, hunt the Jedi down. I was given the title of Darth, the new Dark Lord of the Sith. The Sith were the antithesis of those fool Jedi. For the longest time, we hid in secrecy, the Jedi in their so-called vast knowledge still thinking us defeated for a thousand years. But the Sith lived, and in my master they were brought back in glory. My predecessor, Maul, was the first Sith encountered by Jedi since our setback so long ago. He died at the hands of my former master Kenobi. When I was rebuilt by Palpatine, I did what I had to do, what I longed for. Kill the Jedi who had lied to me. That coward Kenobi went into hiding, and I foolishly believed him dead. Yoda had hid as well, but I believed his age would kill him in time.

I remember the day I and my squadron of Stormtroopers stormed the Jedi Council. Mace Windu was the first to fall, his head taken by my crimson blade of energy. Yaddle was next, then one by one I killed them all, save Yoda. He managed to temporarily blind me, and he escaped via shuttle.

I left the Temple and ordered my fleet overhead to devastate the building. There were 500 Jedi there that day, apprentices and masters both. They all died within seconds.

My troops had been hunting down the other Jedi not there that day. It didn't take long for the Imperial soldiers to find the Jedi and their families. It was a purifying time. The bodies of Jedi, their spouses and children, lay in heaps upon the ground, many burned beyond physical recognition. The Emperor was pleased.

Years later, he sent me to the Death Star. My old friend Tarkin was overseeing the development. I received information that the plans to the station had been stolen by a group of rebels. I set out to retrieve them. The traitor Leia Organa was the thief. She and her people would pay for their insolence against the Empire.

The rebels had started out as pocket groups of resistance, of little worry to my master. But eventually, the rebels had organized into the Rebel Alliance, and were gaining support, and more importantly, weapons and other resources. This Organa woman was long believed to be a sympathizer, but now was shown to be much more.

A traitor.

I was aboard a star destroyer, searching for the rebel ship with the stolen plans.

We caught the ship, and the princess, but she had placed the plans in a droid and launched him to the surface of the below world of Tatooine. It was a world I had no desire to go to again. That was the place where my life took a big turn, and it held many memories better left forgotten.

As historic records show, the Death Star was defeated, but I found out I had a son. A son! To carry on my legacy when the Dark Side finally claimed me. And while in the physical realm, he could rule by my side. I had started forming plans to overthrow my master, for I felt his time was to end. With a son, I would be mighty against Palpatine. I worked hard to conceal my desires from his mind.

I had my son Luke once, on Bespin, but he escaped. But the seeds had been sown. I told him of his true parentage. I was his father. Perhaps his father's soul was dead, but Vader would tap into Luke's darker mentality and bring him over to the dark side. He had received some training from Obi Wan, who finally died on the Death Star. By the time I confronted him on Endor and brought him to the second Death Star, he was powerful indeed, and I then learned I had a second child. Leia! His twin. If I had only known when she was prisoner to the Empire on the first Death Star. I wouldn't need Luke as bad.

Luke defeated me in combat, taking my hand, as I took his in our first meeting. My master ordered him to kill me and take my place, but Luke refused. Why? He defied the Emperor. Then I learned Anakin wasn't completely out of my soul. Anakin saw Luke being killed by the Emperor's lightning bolts, and he pushed me from his mind and soul. Darth Vader was cast out forever as Anakin went on to save his son's life, which resulted in his own ending. He died in the Light.

But I, Vader, wasn't gone. I had been so engulfed in the Dark Side of the Force, that my consciousness had become separate. Two souls in one body. Vader and Skywalker. My spirit floated in the abyss of space, floating between the physical plane and the sub dimensions of reality.

I saw different worlds, different times. I saw a world where Vader never existed, for Anakin Skywalker never succumbed to the Dark Side. I saw a world where my son had become so powerful he cast down Palpatine and he and I ruled as Emperor and lived forever, the Dark Side keeping him young and powerful.

I don't know how many years went by as I floated in nothingness. I saw a ship fly by me. It looked new and sleek. The markings read as a New Republic ship. So, the Republic was back, under new management. Perhaps it would last another thousand generations before falling as the first did. Or perhaps it would last no longer than a year. I don't know how it happened, but my spirit shot towards the ship, merging with it. I flew through the control systems, and into the captain's mind. He was Captain Won Jinn, the great great great great great great great grand nephew of Qui Gon. I was many generations in the future. And it appears that I missed somebody in the Jedi Purge. Qui Gon had a sister who had children. They were well hidden. Obi Wan must have wiped their records from the archives. Yes, he delved into the man's mind. They were well hidden on some backwater world called Durmych'va. Captain Jinn was thirty-seven years old, and a Jedi Knight. He was married to Kathlee Mareel, the descendant of Jaster Mareel, an old friend of mine. They had three sons together.

I could take his mind and push his soul out of the body, and take it over. With his force abilities and my own that linger in the back of my spirit, I could devastate this New Republic. And with three sons to train as well. And the descendant of Boba Fett, who was the greatest Mandalorian Warrior of all time. She was his wife now. Fett himself had latent force abilities, and he had studies the ways of the Sith as well. I could tap into her soul and make her like her ancestor. She would make a formidable student as well.

Yes, soon I, the immortal spirit of Vader, will return and take the galaxy as I meant to long ago.

I learned that Palpatine had come back, his own soul floating towards Byss, his hidden world in the core. I had been there before, and had seen his cloning vats. He had planned on living forever that way. But he was gone, forever trapped in the limbo of darkness that dark Jedi who fail to succeed go. His mind would be driven into insanity forever. But I would succeed where he didn't.

I will live forever. I will bring back the Sith. It will be as glorious as it was in the days of Naga Sadow. I will bring back the Mandalorian commandos. I will now and forever wipe out the Jedi. I will not let any escape. But first I will have to train my new family in the ways of the dark side. And if any of them fail, they will die. If they will not turn to my side, they will die. It will be better to be the only force user in the galaxy instead of having them turn to the light.

And if necessary, I will kill the infants born with the force, to prevent them from raising the Jedi again.

Vader is back.
